Carmen Schacht, 79, of Cresco, Iowa passed away on Friday, January 4, 2019 at the Accura Care Center in Cresco, Iowa.

Carmen was born in Vinton, Iowa on April 5, 1939 to Carlos and Dorothy (Long). She graduated in 1958 from Washington High School in Cedar Rapids. Following high school, she went to work for Baker Paper Company. She worked for them until she married Everett Schacht on July 8, 1967. Together they farmed north of Cresco. They milked and raised hogs until 1968. They continued farming concentrating on stock cattle and hogs. She worked on the farm until her health wouldn’t allow. She then went to work for the Decorah Community Action for 13 years.

She was very active in the Immanuel Lutheran Church including teaching Sunday School, Bible School, and was in a Women’s Group. Carmen attended two National Conventions in Detroit and Milwaukee for her work in church. She also was greatly involved in working with the Easter Seals as a Coordinator of Peer Support for 13 years. As the AgrAbility Peer Support Specialist, Carmen provided direction and support to the AgrAbility Friends and Family Programs. She received the State of Iowa Governor’s Volunteer Award in 1992. Carmen enjoyed reading, computers, getting to know people, and baking.

She is survived by her husband Everett, a son Neil, a sister Corriene Kos, a sister-in-law Alma “Al” Long, and niece and nephews, Greg (Kris) Long, Brian (Lori)Long, Tom (Colleen) Altman, Mike Kos, and Gayle Kos.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her grandparents, a sister Carlene Altman, a brother Larry Long, brother-in-law Art Altman, a brother Gerald, and a brother-in-law Larry Kos.
