Winona, Minn. - Daniel Edward Burnikel, age 55, of Winona, Minn., passed away peacefully in the comfort of his home in the arms of his wife and surrounded by family on Nov. 12, 2018.
Mass of Christian Burial was held on Nov. 17, 2018, at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in Winona, with Rev. Mark McNea officiating. Interment was at Calvary Cemetery in Cresco, Iowa.
Daniel was born on Aug. 1, 1963, in Cresco to Edward and Geraldine (Weber) Burnikel. He graduated from Crestwood High School (Cresco) in 1982 and from Iowa Central Community College/Fort Dodge in 1984. On June 21, 1986, he married Jayne Elizabeth Ollendick, whom he met in eighth grade, in Cresco. They moved to Winona, from Fairmont, Minn. in December 1993, where Dan worked for Benchmark Electronics for 25 years as a Technical Project Manager. Previous to his years at Benchmark, Dan worked at Telex in Blue Earth, Minn. He was a member of the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart.
Daniel enjoyed biking area trails with his family and friends. He spent many hours watching his children play high school and collegiate sports. He was an avid college sports fan — Go Hawkeyes. He loved to spend his summers fishing and recreational boating. His dog, Jersey, was his constant companion on land and water. He and his family have incredible craftsmanship, and their ingenuity is remarkable, most recently shown at his daughter’s wedding.
He is survived by his wife, Jayne; daughter, Alexis (Ron) White of Greensburg, Pa.; son, Owen of Milwaukee, Wis.; his mother, Geraldine Burnikel of Lime Springs, Iowa; two sisters, Debbie (Mike) Tompkins and Deann (Don) Leeps; father and mother-in-law, Ron and Suzanne Ollendick; brothers and sister-in-law, Jon (Tammie) Ollendick, Joe (Tracy) Ollendick and Jill (Dan) Jirak; nieces and nephews, Boe, Mason, Corbin, Jessica, Jacob, Zeb, Zoe, Jared, Josh, Jace and Will; and many other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his father, Edward John Burnikel on June 21, 2018.Source: Cresco Times Dec. 1, 2018
