DEATH OF ELDER COTES

Elder Cotes, of the M. E. church, who lived a few miles north of this place (Lime Springs), after a sickness of some two or three weeks, of typhoid pneumonia, died on Thursday the 11th inst., about 11 o'clock a.m. He passed away without a struggle while sitting in his chair. His age was 65.

It was the request of the deceased that Mr. Smith, the presiding Elder, should preach his funeral sermon. In consequence of the snow blockade he could not reach this place until Tuesday the following week, at which time the funeral took place at the Old Town in the midst of one of those terrific storms which have been of such frequent occurrence in the north west this winter.

The same train which brought Elder Smith brought a brother of the deceasd from western New York just in time to be present at the funeral. It was indeed an affecting scene and caused many tearful eyes as the widow and this brother met, unexpectedly to her, just as the mourners entered the church. This brother left his home on receiving the intelligence of the Elder's sickness, fondly hoping to see him alive, but was a week on the way in consequence of the condition of the railroads.

Elder Cotes was a man of more than ordinary abilities as a preacher, and had been a person of prominence in the denomination in western New York. His denominational convictions were strong, were held with firmness and advocated with zeal, but with christian charity towards other denominations. He leaves a grown up son in western New York by a former marriage, and a wife and infant son in the now desolate home, who have the warm sympathy of the entire community.
