OBITUARY.
Joseph P. Howe, son of Joseph and Eunice Smith Howe, was born July 15, 1827, at Riga, Monroe Co. N. Y.
When eight years of age the family moved to Crawford Co., Penn. He attended the Kingsville Academy and afterward was a student at Alleghany College, Meadville, Penn, going from there to Kentucky, where he spent four years in teaching.
Returning to Pennsylvania he was married to Sabrena S. Vosburg, July 14th, 1853, and soon after came west, going first to Illinois and later in 1856 to Bristol Center, Fillmore Co., Minnesota when Minnesota was still a territory.
He pre-empted some land, and while making his home upon it was elected to the state House of Representatives for 1861. After seversl{sic} years upon the farm, he engaged in mercantile business for a short time in the village of Granger, Minn., and later worked up quite a business collecting and other similar work. A severe illness unfitting him for further active work, he retired from business and came to Cresco in 1885, where his life is well known.
After a period of poor health lasting nearly a year he breathed his last at 11 o’clock p. m., Dec. 16, 1903.
From a family of six brothers and one sister, the sister, Mrs. Harriet Barton of Lincoln, Neb., alone remains, and was present at the funeral
Mrs. Howe died April 14, 1900.
Of five children born to them, three are living: Hattie E., Florence E. and Joseph H. One grandchild, little Joseph Howe, and H. L. Vosburgh, of Iconium, Ia., his mother’s brother, completes the family
