OBITUARY,
Mable C. E. Evans, oldest daughter of Alonzo J. and Susan M. Evans, was born in Cresco, Howard county, Iowa, March 27, 1891, and died December 9, 1903, aged 12 years, 8 months and 18 days.
In the latter part of last September Mable was taken ill with inflammatory rheumatism, suffering intensely for nearly three month{s}, and although the best physicians of Cresco were employed they were unable to dispel the disease. At one time, however, it seemed as tho they had conquered, as she was able to be up and about the house, but the trouble soon returned and she was again confined to her bed. During the long and painful illness she was a most patient sufferer, never once murmuring or complaining, and always thoughtful of the comforts of those about her. She lived and died in the faith of her Saviour, and among her last words were these, “I never was so happy in my life,” and “I know I am going home to Jesus.” She left this world with a calm and peaceful smile, and loving friends, teachers and schoolmates covered her casket with beautiful flowers as they came to pay their last sad rite.
Six little girl schoolmates acted as her pall bearers.
The funeral services were held in the Baptist church Friday afternoon, Dec. 11, conducted by Rev. J. B. Smith, and her still and silent form was lain to rest in Oak Lawn cemetery.“We loved her, yes we loved her,
But angels loved her more,
And they have sweetly called her
To yonder shining shore.
The golden gate was open,
A gentle voice said come,
And with farewells unbroken
She comely entered home.”
A Card of Thanks.
