D. A. NORTON KILLED.
The Victim of a Run-a-Way Accident Sunday Afternoon.
Last Sunday afternoon, D. A. Norton and wife started for their farm in Burr Oak township, Winneshiek Co., with a load of articles with which to prepare for an auctions sale of their farm and personal property which was to have taken place to-day. A short distance east of Plymouth Rock their team became frightened at a school house and started to run down a hill and were soon beyond control. At the bottom of the hill there is a sharp turn and as the team made the turn the buggy was overturned and Mr. and Mrs. Norton thrown out, the former evidently striking on the top of his head as the entire top of his skull was crushed and splintered, Mrs. Norton strangely escaped with only a few bruises and a cut lip, and after tying a handkerchief over her husband’s bleeding head started for help, first going to Mike Gauls’ but no one was at home, she then returned to the scene of the accident and again started for help when she saw some boys and with their aid assistance was got to convey Mr. Norton to the farm home about two miles distant, but not until over an hour had elapsed that she was practically endeavoring to summon aid. Dr. Kessel was called but the injuries were such that no help could be given and Mr. Norton passed away about 2:30 Monday morning. The accident occurred about 3 p.m. on the afternoon.
Mr. Norton has always been unfortunate in meeting with accidents and run-a-ways, although having handled horses all his life, and only last winter in a run-a-way received injuries that kept hin{sic} in bed for several weeks.
The remains were brought to the Cresco home yesterday afternoon.Source: Twice-A-Week Plain Dealer Dec. 8, 1903, LP, C7

TWO TRAGIC DEATHS,
Samuel Rosa of Decorah and D. A. Norton of Cresco are Killed in Accidents.
Monday the Decorah friends and acquaintances of D. A. Norton of Cresco, brother of W. J. Norton of this city, were shocked to learn that he had been killed the day before in a runaway accident, while on his way from Cresco over to his farm in Burr Oak township. Following close upon this came the news that Samuel Rosa of this city had met his death at his farm in Frankville township about noon Monday by falling from a load of hay and breaking his neck. He had driven to the farm that morning to attend to having some hay drawn to market. He was assisting in loading and was on top of one load, turning it around, when it tipped over. He was thrown over a fence about eight feet distant, lighting on his head and shoulders and breaking his neck. Death was instantaneous.
Mr. Rosa was an old and respected resident of Frankville, a member of a large family whose names have been intimately connected with the social life and history of that portion of the county for many years. He enjoyed a wide acquaintance and friendship and in their bereavement the family have the sympathy of all. He is survived by his wife and two sons, and a number of brothers and sisters.
Our Burr Oak correspondent tells the details of the death of Mr. Norton. He has resided for many years in Cresco, but for several years lived on his farm in Burr Oak, only moving back to his old home a few months ago. He was a man who enjoyed the respect of his neighbors and business associates and was in all respects a worthy citizen.Source: Decorah Republican Dec. 3, 1903 Page 6 Col 1, 2
A host of friends in Burr Oak were saddened this morning by the news of the death of D. A. Norton, late of Cresco, but for a number of years a resident of our town, his home, on " Pine Lawn Farm," where he and his son Alvah run a farm with modern conveniences. Mr. and Mrs. Norton were coming over from Cresco yesterday afternoon to be in attendance at their sale which was to have taken place Tuesday, Dec. 1st, and little did they think it would be a funeral instead. When coming down the stony hill near Cold-Water creek the horses ran away, and in trying to control them one of the lines broke and they were both thrown down the bank among the stones to the ground. Mrs. Norton, seeing the unconscious condition of her husband went to the nearest house (which was what we know as the old school house) but no one being at home she was obliged to go farther to the Reese home for help. This was a half mile away and in her injured condition consumed valuable time. Mr. Norton was taken to his old, old home, a distance of nearly three miles, and Drs. Emmons of Burr Oak, Kessel of Cresco and Jewell of Decorah all summoned, but nothing could be done to save the life of the injured man. He never recovered consciousness after the accident and died at 4 o’clock the following morning. His skull was so crushed that the brain oozed from the wound. The horses ran two miles and stopped in Mr. Kelley’s yard.
