John Walton was born in Sutton, St. Edmunds, Lincolnshire, England, Feb. 15, 1833, and died at his home in Orleans twp., Winnesheik{sic} Co., Iowa, Sunday, Nov. 8, 1903.
At an early age Mr. Walton left the land of his birth and came to America, the land of many opportunities. He spent some two years in Illinois, and late in 1853 he came to Iowa. In 1863 he was married to Elizabeth Johnston, of New Oregon and with her, settled on a farm in Orleans twp. 4 miles east of Cresco. Here this worthy couple spent the remainder of their lives, and by their unceasing labors and careful savings amassed a comfortable fortune.
Mr. and Mrs. Walton were known far and near for their genial, generous, hospitable natures. Both seemed happiest when able to give something to a friend or neighbor. Though the same as all early settlers, Mr. Walton met with many reverses, he was not discouraged but on the contrary was ever ready to help a friend less fortunate then himself.
To them were born two children, a son and a daughter.
Mrs. Walton and the daughter, Mrs. George Breedloye preceeded the husband and father to the “Better Land” but a few months ago. The only surviving member of the family being the son, Frank Walton, now living on the old homestead.
Mr. Walton and family and the sister’s family have the sympathy of a host of relatives and warm friends in this, their third sad bereavement within a year.
Funeral services were held at the home Tuesday morning, Nov. 10, 1903, and interment was in New Oregon Cemetery.
