Stewartville, Minn. - Lucile W. Floyd, age 99, of Stewartville, Minn. died on Aug. 22, 2018 of natural causes at the Stewartville Care Center, where she had been a resident since 2013.
The memorial service will be at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 26, 2018 at Zion Lutheran Church in Stewartville with Rev. Byron Meline officiating.
A time of visitation will take place one hour prior to the service at the church on Sunday morning. A private family burial will take place at Oakland Cemetery in Iowa City, Iowa at a later date. Lucile Winnifred Bigalk was born on Aug. 12, 1919 in Howard County, Iowa to Fred and Frieda (Meyer) Bigalk. She grew up on the family farm and attended country school and Cresco, Iowa schools, graduating from Cresco High School in 1937. She attended Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa, graduating with an Associates Degree in 1940. She attended the University of Iowa in Iowa City, graduating with a Bachelors Degree in music education in 1952. She then began a long career as a music teacher in Iowa public schools.
Lucile was married on Aug. 14, 1955 to Orval J. Floyd in Cresco. The couple lived there before moving to New Jersey for one year. Orval was a chemist, both in industry labs and as a senior researcher at the University of Iowa. The Floyds made their home in Iowa City for many years.
Mr. Floyd died in 2008, and Lucile moved to Stewartville in 2012 to live near her sister, Mildred Eberling and family. She was a past member of Zion Lutheran Church in Iowa City.
Lucile and Orval enjoyed square dancing and were members of the Ocean Waves Square Dancing Club for many years. Following their retirement in 1986, they enjoyed traveling and visited 48 states. Lucile loved music and playing the piano, gardening and following Iowa Hawkeyes sports teams.
Lucile is survived by her great-nieces and great-nephew, Marcia Johnson of Rochester, Minn., Linda Noack (Jeff Blahut) of Plymouth, Minn., Bruce (Kristie) Johnson of Minneapolis, Minn. and Janell (Dan) Schefers of Rochester, and great-great-nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Orval; her parents; her sister, Mildred Eberling; and infant twin sisters, Eileen and Irene Bigalk.
