Lowell Sovereign, age 83, of Cresco died Friday, August 24, 2018, surrounded by family.
Lowell was born February 12, 1935, in Cresco, Iowa, to Gerald and Elsie (Frank) Sovereign. He graduated from Cresco High School in 1953. He met Gladys Waller, his soulmate, in eighth grade, and they were married on May 29, 1955, at the United Methodist Church in Cresco. They were blessed with four children: Dave (Shirley) Sovereign, Gayle (Gary) Kelm, Gary (Vicki) Sovereign, and Terri (Ed Agnello) Sovereign; seven grandkids, and 17 great-grandkids.
He was a member of FFA and farmed all his life with his father Gerald, along with his brothers, sons, nephews, and grandson. He was proud to be an active member of the community, serving on many civic and community boards and organizations. Lowell was a lifelong member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and served on many church boards and committees. He was a member of the CUSB Bank Board for 34 years. He took particular pride in spearheading the renovation of the Cresco Theatre & Opera House, cleaning out the Vernon Springs mill pond, overseeing construction of L & L Apartments, and the Thomson Pool and Fitness Center. Somehow in the middle of all those projects he found time to design and build a grill for burgers, brats, and pancakes that is currently serving many community events. He was an active member of Kiwanis, CIDC, and a member of the Times Plain Dealer Hall of Fame. Lowell took up golf in his 40s, and was an active member of the Cresco Country Club, playing regularly. Over his golf career he scored three hole-in-ones. He was continuously leading projects to upgrade the course.
Lowell and Gladys loved playing golf, watching the Vikings and Cyclones, spending time with the kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids, and wintering in Arizona. He enjoyed spending time on his yard and flowers in Iowa and Arizona, and he built and maintained miles of trails through the woods of the home place. Lowell is survived by his wife, Gladys; his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, his brother Jim (Sue) Sovereign, Merle (Marge) Sovereign, Pat (Don) Switzer, sisters-in-law Marlene Sovereign, Beth Waller, Mary Lou Markham, and many nieces and nephews.
Lowell was preceded in death by his parents; a brother Wayne Sovereign, sister and brother-in-law, Connie & Kent Markham, sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law Russell & Velma Waller, Dr. Roger Waller, D.V.M., Gayle & Saint Freeburg, and nephew, Brian Sovereign.
