Obituary.
August Ferdinand Schacht was born March 1st, 1840, in Zelgnieno, Province Posen, Germany. He was baptized in early infancy, instructed in the public school, and at the age of 16 confirmed, after careful instruction in religion. Then he worked with his father in building and repairing wagons, At the age of 30 he served his country as a soldier for three years, taking an active part in the wars of 1864 and 1866 against Denmark and Austria. He was discharged from the military service with the war medal for bravery. In 1868 he was married to Julie Giese, his mourning widow. They lived two years longer in the old country and came to America in 1870. After a short stay in Chicago they moved to Delaware county, Iowa. In this county they lived about 13 years, and there the six children were born, who survive the death of the beloved father—five of the children died before him. In 1883 the family came to Howard Co., Iowa, and bought a farm near Davis Corners, Two years ago he sold this farm and moved to Cresco for rest, after long years of hard work; but did not rest very long and bought a farm near Lime Springs He did not livevery long on his new place, he was taken sick with pneumonia, and after a short sickness died very unexpectedly, on Feb. 18th, at 5 p. m., altogether too early for his mourning: widow and children, for he was a loving father and a good husband, an upright man, honest and true, honored by all who were acquainted with him. August Schacht was a faithful member of the German Lutheran congregation at Davis Corners, one who set up a good christian example. Funeral services were held at the M. E. church of Lime Springs. Interment at Lime Springs cemetery, Sunday, Feb. 22, 1903, Rev. C. Neidermeier officiating. August Schacht was 63 years old, lacking a few days. May he rest in peace till the great day of resurrection.
