ERNST
John August Ernst was born October 1st 1831 in Lippe Detmold, Germany. He was baptized and confirmed in the Evangelical Lutheran Church. After confirmation he went to sea as sailor and he has made many a voyage from Germany to America. In 1857 he married Johanna Alles, his first wife. Six children were born to him, one of whom died in infancy in Germany, three sons and two daughters survive the death of the beloved father. In 1862 he came with his family to this land and settled first in the state of Illinois for six years. Then he came to Iowa in 1863 and lived on a farm six miles south of Cresco In 1894 his first wife died and be became a widower for nearly two years. Then he was married again to Carolina Hohn, his mourning widow. The deceased was always in good health until two years ago, when his heart caused him a good deal of trouble. The first week of September he went to Dell Rapids, South Dakota, to visit his daughter and son-in-law and there the angel of Death called him away from this earth. The remains were brought to Cresco, funeral services were held at his old place by Rev. C. Niedermeir, interment being at New Oregon Cemetery, Friday September 12, 1902. The deceased brought his life to 71 years, 11 months and 9 days. He was a member of the German Lutheran Congregation of Cresco, one who set up a good example of Christian life, he was also a loving father and a good respected citizen. May he rest in peace.
