Olreich Faulkhauser who had been on the Dr. Connolly farm northwest of the county farm, was operated upon at the Dr. Kessel hospital Wednesday evening for strangulated hernia, died during the night. Strangulated hernia meant death or relief to the patient. An operation is the forlorn hope of the medical fraternity. The patient from the effects of the trouble is already at death’s door, and while the patient may be saved by an operation, he is sure to die without it. Mr. Faulkhauser was a middle aged man, native of Switzerland, and leaves a widow and five or six children, the eldest about thirteen, to mourn his untimely death. The deceased is spoken of as a good and exemplary man and citizen.

FANKHAUSER.
Ulrich Faukhauser was born April 2, 1865, at Rothenbach, Kanton Bern, Switzerland. As the child of Christiian parents he was baptized and confirmed in the Protestant Church of Switzerland. After confirmation he hired himself out to earn his own living. In 1887 he married Anna Wermot, his mourning widow. One child was born to them in Switzerland but died after a few months. In 1889 they came to America and settled near Cresco on a rented farm. Seven children were born to them here in this country, the oldest son a little over 12 and the baby just a few months old. Monday night, September 8th. The deceased was suddenly taken sick with a rupture. He was taken to the hospital and had an operation, but it was all in vain; he died Wednesday night shortly after twelve o’clock. The funeral was held Saturday afternoon, Rev. C. Niedermeier officiating. Interment was at New Oregon cemetery. It is a very sad case, the widow being left alone with seven children, none of them of age. May God give the poor widow courage and may many show her a helping hand.

Transcriber’s Note: The name is spelled three different ways; however, the gravestone shows the spelling of Fankhauser with the first name of Ulrich. It also shows the birth on April 12, 1865 and death on September 11, 1902.
