George W. Combs,
who had been a conspicuous figure about Cresco from its first inception, joined the great majority Thursday, June 19, 1902, aged about 63 years. He was a native of New Hampshire, but came to Iowa before the breaking out of the ciuil{sic} war and was among the early volunteers, having been in the service for fully four years. He was a member of Co. A, 3rd Iowa battery. Our first acquaintance with him was during the war, when he was at home on sick leave, the doctors disparing of his recovery. He was a long time at Cole’s Hotel in New Oregon before recovering sufficiently to return to duty. After his discharge he returned to Chester, and in due time was married to Miss Harriet Collins who survives him. Five children were born to them, three of whom are living, viz: Charles, Clarence and Rose, wife of Al Burnet, of St. Paul. Beside these he leaves a brother, Stephen B. Combs of Cresco.
He was a good citizen, an indulgent parent and husband. He was good to those who needed help, concealing a kind and generous heart beneath a rough exterior. He will be greatly missed.
CARD HF{sic} THANKS.
With grateful hearts we tender thanks to those who so kindly remembered us in the hour of our sorrow and affliction in the loss of father and husband.
MRS. HARRIET COMBS AND FAMILY.

Transcriber’s Note: His gravestone shows he was 62 years old.
