Suicide.
Thos. A. Brydges, so long a clerk at Strother House, committed suicide in his room in the Strother House at 10:30 Tuesday night, shooting himself through the head. The weapon used was a 38 caliber revolver, the bullet entering his right temple, passing entirely through his head, and after striking the bed post falling to the floor. Despondency caused by ill health and lack of employment was the cause. He had no relatives in this country, but had a nephew and niece in London, England, the latter having visited him here two years ago.
Many, on hearing of his death, surmised he must have been out of money, but such was not the fact, as several days before his death he had informed Mrs. Strother that he had about $300 in bank, and told her his wishes in case “anything happened to him,” and about $100 was found in his purse. He had also received letters, as have others from his niece, asking him to come and spend the balance of his days with her, and had partially arranged to make the trip to England as soon as his health would permit.
He was first known to our people at McGregor when that was the trading point for this section and has been there and in this county for over 40 years. Most of the time he had been in the employ of Mr. Strother as bookkeeper and hotel clerk, an{sic} his request of Mrs. Strother was to bury him as near to Mr. Strother as possible. To C. D. Nichols he said the day before his death that he wished the doctor would give him something to put him in his eternal sleep. This was the only intimation he made of the step contemplated.
He lived nearly two hours after shooting himself, although never recovering consciousness.
The funeral occurred Thursday afternoon from the Congregational church.Transcriber’s Note: The above notice shows his middle initial as A but his gravestone shows his middle name as Higgins and that he was born in 1822.
