OBITUARY.
EMMA GERTRUDE CAWARD.
Emma Gertrude Caward, daughter of Mrs. Frank Sayre, was born at Fayette, Iowa, May 25, 1877, and died at the residence of Frank Sayre in West Decorah, June 7, 1900. Her early years were spent at Cresco, la., whence the family moved to St. Paul where she lived until the early part of 1897, since which time she has lived at the home of Mr. Sayre in West Decorah. Such is the brief story of her life, a tale that’s quickly told, but its purity and sweetness will always remain a cherished memory.
At times, for many years, a great sufferer, she bore her suffering courageously and without complaint. At all times genial, happy and hopeful, and with a smile and word of good cheer for one and all. Ambitious to accomplish something and to make her place in life, her plans were far beyond her physical strength, and were never to be realized, but to her they were realities. She stood a moment on the threshold of woman-hood and full of hope and happiness, and love of life, looked out upon the unknown world, and ‘ere life’s morning dream had dispelled by mid-day’s stern realities, the unseen hand was laid upon her and her lips were sealed in death. Death came to her in the early morning hours and she died as peacefully as she had lived. She passed away “like one who wraps the drapery of his couch about him and lies down to pleasant dreams.” A host of friends and acquaintances and a bereaved family mourn her loss, and though the dews of death have gathered on her brow, and tho’ her voice is stilled forever, the influence of her sweet unselfish life will never be extinguished.—Decorah Journal.

Sudden Death.
At three o’clock this morning Miss Emma Caward, second daughter of Mrs. Frank Sayre, died from an attack of heart disease. Miss Caward was in her usual health yesterday and the attack was very sudden. She was a beautiful young lady who enjoyed a large friendship in Decorah and in Cresco, where she formerly lived. In Such an affliction sympathy cannot assuage the grief of the bereaved ones.
