Mary Ann Andera , age 83 of rural Lawler, IA (West of Protivin) passed away Tuesday, May 15, 2018 in Waterloo with family at her side.

Born March 24, 1935 to Alois and Alice (Lukes) Fencl on the family farm in Winneshiek County just East of Protivin. She met William Andera who was home on leave from the Navy at the Inwood Ballroom in Spillville, IA they married on August 24, 1954. They lived in San Leandro, California for 6 months, returning to Iowa in 1956 so Willie could help on the family farm. Mary Ann and Willie purchased a farm five miles west of Protivin in March of 1956, where they raised six children. After 58 years of marriage Willie passed away on April 25, 2013.

Mary Ann was the oldest of 6 children. She attended Holy Trinity Catholic School in Protivin, often walking to school with neighbors or by horse and sleigh driven by her daddy. Graduating from Rudolphinum High School in 1954, she was a cheerleader for two years and played basketball for two years. Mary Ann enjoyed babysitting in the neighborhood and worked at the Protivin Telephone Office for three years. She was a Protivin Peppy Pals 4-H member, a life time member of Holy Trinity Church in Protivin, and a proud 50 year member of the VFW Auxiliary.

Mary Ann enjoyed helping with the Black Angus cattle and calves (she was referred to as Grandma cow), star gazing, looking for arrowheads and agates on the farm, putting together puzzles, playing solitaire, feeding and watching the birds, watching the Chicago Cubs and Iowa Hawkeyes, taping Full House episodes for the grandkids so she could see the Golden Gate Bridge. She loved her Family, her Town of Protivin, her Church, St. Patrick’s Day and everything Irish and of course, the color blue.

Mary Ann is survived by her six children: Sally(Gary)Wichman ,Gilbertville, IA Deborah(Paul) Schaefer Waterloo, IA, Kenneth (Jeri) Andera, Cresco, IA, Sandra(Pete) Schrandt, Cambria, WI: Cynthia Pitulla, Lakeland, MN: Patrick Andera, Austin, MN 21 Grandchildren: Lisa(Matt)Abbas , Christopher ( Stefani) Wichman, Adam(Laura) Schaefer, Anne Schaefer, Allison(Kyle)Ramaker, Aaron & Aimee Schaefer, Benjamin, Mark, Matthew & John Andera, Sullivan, Clayton, Simon, Cooper & Olive Schrandt, Angus & Ryan Pitulla, Justin(Whitnei)Abel, Bethany(Matt) Regitschnig, Nicholas Andera and 12 great grandchildren: Lynae & Quinn Abbas, Claire, Natalie, Samuel & Grace Schaefer, Jace Andera, Colton & Harper Ramaker, Coen & Greenlee Abel, Briella Regitschnig.

Survived by One sister Betty Falada, Decorah, IA Four brothers ,Leonard(Doris)Fencl,Calmar,IA Victor(Sharla)Fencl, Calmar, IA, James Fencl, Charles City IA, Ernest(Martha)Fencl, Cedar Falls ,IA, Sister –in-laws : Doris Andera ,Ft. Atkinson, IA, Janet Andera, Cresco ,IA, Darlene Andera, Spillville, IA, Brother-in-law James Soukup, Decorah, IA

Mary Ann was preceded in death by her parents: her husband, Father and mother in law: Albert and Frances (Humpal) Andera. Brother in laws: Edward, Albert, Louis, Frank, Cyril, Bobby and Larry Andera. Sister in laws: Adella, Francis, Marcella and Mary
