Death of Ira G. Mead.
Ira G. Mead was born in the town of Mayfield, Montgomery county, now Fulton county, New York. May 26, 1826, and passed away at his home, in Busti, Chautauqua county, N. Y. December 31, 1899, aged 73 years. 7 months and 5 days. He was the second son of Nehemiah and Amanda Mead, whose family consisted of four sons, and three daughters, the eldest, being the editor of the PLAIN DEALER, the youngest an unmarried sister about 52 years of age. They were born in this order: William R., Ira G, Thompson G., Jane Ann wife of Amos P. Wilcox. Jamestown, N, Y., Francis J., Sally Marie, wife of A. F. Wilcox. Columbus, Ohio, and Mary A. His children were two sons, Whitman P., who with his wife and children lived with him on the old homestead, which has been held by the Mead family nearly three fourths of a century, William J., is a prominent attorney of Tacoma, Washington.
He had lived nearly all his life on the farm where he died. He was domestic in his habits abstemious, had a liberal education, had devoted much time to the instruction of youth in the public schools, had traveled considerably in the United States, was a keen observer of men and carefully noted and watched public events, he had frequently visited in this county, his last visit having been some ten years ago when he spent nearly all the summer with his brothers here. He was kind of heart, generous, magnanimous, public spirited, honest, noble and good and the world is the better because he had lived in it. But he has gone to his reward which is a seat among the just and pure and good who have passed to the unknown beyond.
