Services to be held today
Funeral services for John Souhrada will be held at 11:00 a.m., today, Wednesday, April 24 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Cresco with Rev. Glen Wheeler and Rev. Robert Hupp officiating. Pallbearers are: Jim Truka, Tom Beck, Bill Seele, Eldon Strike, Eugene Wamke, and Harold Munkel. Lindstrom Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
John, 66, died Sunday, April 21, 2002 at Gundersen Lutheran Hospital in LaCrosse, WI.
John Joseph Souhrada was born April 30, 1914 in Saratoga Township, Howard County.
On September 19, 1936 he married Hope C. Lidtke. He farmed all his life in Howard County.
John was concerned for the environment and the conservation of our natural resources. He planted thousands of trees. He and his son, Dave, created the Souhrada Forest on the Upper Iowa River. John and Hope created the “Souhrada Wildlife Preserve” near Davis Corners. His 10 years on the Howard County Conservation board helped promote other natural habitat areas.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, and farming.
He is survived by his wife Hope; one daughter; Janel Souhrada Stephens of Tipton; one son: Dave of Grundy Center; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one sister: Viola Leslie of Lime Springs.
John was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers: Richard and Emil; and one sister: Helen.
