Mary A. Smith, 101, Elma
Mary A. Smith, 101, of Elma, died Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2002 at the Colonial Manor in Elma of natural causes.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held Saturday, Feb. 23, at Immaculate Conception Church in Elma with Rev. John Hemann presiding. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery at Elma with Conway-Kolbet Funeral Home handling arrangements.
Mary Amelia Smith was born July 11, 1900 near Protivin, the daughter of John and Anastacia (Prochaska) Pecinovsky. She attended school in Protivin and later Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls where she received her teacher’s certificate. She taught school for several years in New Oregon Township.
Mary was married November 22, 1920 to George E. Smith at Holy Trinity Church in Protivin. The couple farmed in Fort Atkinson and later near Davis Corners where they retired from farming in 1960. They moved to Elma at that time. Mary has been a resident of Colonial Manor in Elma since 1993.
Mary is survived by a daughter, Mildred Rucker of Rock Falls, Ill.; 11 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; a brother, Cyril Pecinovsky of Pearce, Ariz.; a daughter-in-law, Rose Smith of Charles City.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband George in 1972; a son Leland in 1999; a granddaughter, Joan Smith Lyons, in 1993; three brothers, Thomas, Edward and Charles Pecinovsky; and two sisters, Albina Soukup and Frances Smith.
