Harold Newton David Munkel passed away Monday, March 26 at Evans Memorial Home, Cresco, IA.

Harold was born December 29, 1923 to Walter and Helen (Valenta) Munkel. He was raised and spent his life in Lime Springs until disabilities required him to move to Evans. Harold was a 1942 graduate of Lime Springs High School. He very proudly served his country in World War II in the Pacific, becoming a Sergeant in the Army. Upon returning home in 1945, Harold worked in construction with family members, helping build St. Stephens Catholic Church in Chester, IA, in which the family were members. On April 21,1949, he was united in marriage to Betty Robinson. Five children were born to this union.

Harold was employed by Hormel in Austin, MN before joining with his brother, Pete, to form Munkel Brothers construction. Many a home in this area has benefited from work done by them over the years. Harold was the contractor for the Lime Springs Library and Fire Station in1964.

As a seventy-year member of Lloyd L. Horton Legion Post 545 in Lime Springs, Harold served as Commander and in various other offices many times. He was also a member of Howard County VFW Post 4561 and served on their Advisory Board. Harold especially liked to share his photo album from his time in the service and tell stories of his time spent in the Pacific. He was also an active member of the Lime Springs Commercial Club for many years.

Anyone who met Harold soon realized that he loved to hunt and fish, as he had grown up enjoying those activities. But, his passion was playing cards, and he passed this love along to his grandsons. He participated in playing cards until a week before his passing. Harold also enjoyed a good visit and could talk to anyone who had the time to listen. He enjoyed many fabulous adventures on vacations with family and, later, through trips organized by the local bank. He and Betty spent many years as active square dancers as members of The Cresco Squares.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his infant daughter, Cynthia, in 1951; his daughter, Diana Dvorak, in 2013; and five brothers: Irvin, Stanley, Donald (Pete), Lawrence and Eugene.

Harold is survived by his wife, Betty; three children: Terrie (Richard) Mogensen of Lithia, FL; Dave Munkel of Lime Springs, IA; and Robyn Seaton of Eden Prairie, MN; son-in-law, Paul Dvorak of Eden Prairie, MN; eight grandsons who will serve as honorary pallbearers: Christian (Michelle) Mogensen, Matthew Mogensen, Brandon Munkel, Bradley Munkel, Joshua Dvorak, Owen Seaton, Zachary Seaton, Hugh Seaton; one great-granddaughter, Ava Mogensen; and numerous nieces and nephews.
