STURGIS—John I. Sturgis was born in Rochester, New York, May 24, 1815, and died in Cresco, Iowa, October 12, 1899, aged 84 years 4 months and 18 days.
When but a child he moved to Canada and afterwards to New York City, where he lived until he{sic} forty years of age. December 31, 1849, he was married to Miss Eliza A. Hope, who still survives him, with whom he has lived a few months less than 50 years.
In 1855 he came to Howard county, Iowa, where he has ever since resided, except about a year at Plymouth Rock.
He had been in poor health for several months before his death but was confined to his bed but a few days. He was conscious to the last and passed away apparently without pain or struggle.
Mr. Sturgis located in the town, of Paris, about three miles north of Lourdes. In the winter of 1857-8 a postoffice was established at his place, named Sturgis Point, of which he was made postmaster, the office being suspended when the main stage from Decorah to Osage by the way of Howard ceased to run. By trade and occupation the deceased was a type founder, aninvention{sic} of his being in use in every type foundry in Europe and America. About 1859 he sold his farm and moved to New Oregon where he opened a hardware store and tin shop, removing to Cresco, soon after the place became the metropolis of the county. He resided in this place from that time to his death except about a year when conducting a general store at Plymouth Rock, which was destroyed by fire. As a friend, a citizen and a neighbor he was honest, kind and honorable. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. W. K. Lane, the interment being in New Oregon cemetery.
