BRADLEY CHAPIN.
The subject of this sketch was born in Cambridge, Vermont, Sept. 5, 1837, and died in Cresco, May 15, 1899, aged 61 years, 8 months and 10 days. His parents came to Janesville, Wis., when he was a child, he residing with them; from there he came to Decorah and was employed in the tin shop of Finn Bros., where we became acquainted with him in 1858. Two years later he came to Howard county, opening a tin shop in New Oregon, where he remained conducting that business in connection with stoves and general hardware until the advent of the railroad to Cresco, when he was among the first to locate here, building, owning and occupying the store in Union block south of and adjoining that of Dr. Clemmer, and there continuing the stove, tin and hardware trade until about 1878-9.
Although his hand and purse were always open to the poor and needy, by application to business and strict economy, though starting without means, he accumulated a handsome property, leaving a competence to his wife and children, and above all a name for strict integrity and upright dealing.
He was married with Miss Emma Niles, Feb. 19, 1871, which union was blessed with two daughters, Clarice and Helen, both of whom, with the widow, live to mourn his death.
In 1882, Mr. Chapin and his family moved to Chester where he conducted a store stocked with general merchandise until their return to Cresco some two and a half years since.
Mr. Chapin was a man of more than ordinary intelligence, and had he possessed the confidence in himself of many others could have distinguished himself as a speaker before the people.
His sister, Mrs. Helen Kimball, of St. Louis, came and was with him during a large part of his illness, she and his wife and children being the only near relatives he had.
