Malinda Irene Whisenhunt,57, of Cedar Rapids, IA formerly of Riceville, passed away Monday January 22, 2018 at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Malinda Irene Sunnes was born to Sterling and Margaret (Wilson) Sunnes on September 13, 1960 at Mary Greely Hospital in Ames, Iowa. Her brother Gary was born in 1963 and then the family moved to a farm south of Ionia in 1964. Malinda went to school in Nashua until 2nd grade. Then the family moved again in March 1968 to the farm by LeRoy, Minnesota. Malinda was confirmed at the LeRoy Lutheran Church. She graduated from Riceville High School in 1978. The family moved to Leonard, Texas in 1980. Malinda worked at the Greenville Hospital and at an orthopedic doctor’s office in Greenville. Malinda met Ronnie Whisenhunt and they were married April 21, 1984 in Celeste, TX. She and Ronnie moved back near the farm in LeRoy after Malinda’s father Sterling Sunnes passed away in September 1987.
She was a Packers, Iowa State Cyclones, and Wildcats fan. She enjoyed working in the fields, gardening, sewing, making quilts for new babies she knew, and was active in 4-H. She enjoyed spending time with her granddaughter Kaylee Kat.
Survivors include her husband Ronnie Whisenhunt, daughter Mindy Jo (fiancé Jered Starr), granddaughter Kaylee Marie; one brother Gary (Janelle) Sunnes; four nieces Dana (Matt) Strottman, Joanna, Dianna, and Hannah Sunnes; one great niece Leah Ann Strottman; three aunts: Gladys (Lyle) Steward, Grace Sunnes, and Lillian Gardner. Survivors on the Whisenhunt side include nephews Wyatt Whisenhunt and Thomas Stoner; a niece Lissa Stoner and sister-in-law JoAnna (James) Bingham.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Sterling in September 1987 and Margaret in November of 2014, her grandparents, her father-in-law Sherman in 1988, mother-in-law Doris in 2013, brother-in-law Vernon Whisenhunt in 2009 and brother-in-law Larry Whisenhunt in 2011.
