In Memoriam.
The death of Mike Devereaux is a severe shock, not only to his relatives, but to all the people of Elma. Mike was in the flower of young manhood, full of life, vigor, hope and ambition He was 25 years old last November and had been railroading only about five months. The days of his youth were beset with many snares and and{sic} temptations. He had been deprived of a mother’s care and watchfulness and his advantages of education and training were handicapped in many ways. But Mike was made of the right kind of manly stuff, overcame these vicissitudes and conquered all temptations. He worked himself out of the old ruts and the evils of his surroundings. He became steady in his habits, industrious and conscientious, and won for himself the respect of everyone who knew him to a degree enjoyed by few others. For seven years he was in the employ of H. H. Maiman, the merchant tailor, and only left his position because his eyesight became affected. Last August he found employment in the round house at Dubuque and soon afterward was sent out on the road as fireman. His railroad career was short and ended in appaling{sic} disaster. His remains were brought from Dubuque Wednesday and laid to rest in the Catholic cemetery this morning, a large concourse of people attending the funeral. The sons of Veterans and the former members of the Elma Cornet Band attended the funeral in a body, Mike having been captain of the former and an honored member of the latter organization. The G. A. R. also attended as an honorary escort. May Mike Devereaux sleep peacefully, “Like one who wraps the drapery of his couch about him and lies down to pleasant dreams.” –Elma News-Register,
