ELMA -- Betty Stevenson, 71, Elma, died Monday, May 14, 2001 at the Colonial Manor in Elma of cancer.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, May 17 at Immaculate Conception Church in Elma with Rev. Roger R. Rethamel officiating. Theresa Burke was organist and accompanied soloist Betty Boehmer and the Immaculate Conception Choir. Hymn selections included "Here I Am Lord", "Gift of Finest Wheat", "Prayer of St. Francis" and "City of God". Lector was Gail Ives. Betty’s grandchildren served as gift bearers. Eucharistic ministers were Keith Roethler and Norb Burke. Betty's husband and children placed the pall.
Burial was in Calvary Cemetery in Elma with Kenneth, Dennis, Gary and Kelly Stevenson and Glen and Nancy Benson serving as casket bearers.
Visitation was from 3-8 p.m. Wednesday, May 17 at Conway Funeral Home in Elma, with a 4 p.m. Rosary and 7 p.m. Scripture Service.
Elizabeth Mary Stevenson was born May 29, 1929 at St. Cecelia, the daughter of Dennis & Nina (O’Neil) Tierney. She graduated from Immaculate Conception High School in Elma on May 30, 1948. On Oct. 30, 1948 she was united in marriage with Kenneth Stevenson at Immaculate Conception Church in Elma. They have resided in Elma since their marriage. Together the couple owned and operated Kenny's DX in Elma. Betty and her husband were also the caretakers for the Immaculate Conception Church and School as well as Calvary Cemetery in Elma for many years, the was a member of Immaculate Conception Church and Rosary Society.
Surviving are her husband, Kenneth, Elma; three sons, Dennis (Sandy), Elma, Gary, Mason City, Kelly (Cindy), Cedar Rapids; a daughter, Nancy (Glen) Benson, New Hampton; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild.
Preceding her in death were a grandson, Patrick Benson; her parents; four brothers, Carl, Clifton, Walter and Merle Tierney; a sister, Grace Sweeney.
