A Mass of Christian burial will be held for Russell 'Rusty' A. Barnes of Cresco, Iowa 11:00 a.m. on Monday, April 1st at Notre Dame Parish, Cresco. Visitation will be held on April 1st, 2013 one hour prior to services at the church. Hindt-Hudek Funeral Home 404 North Elm Street, Cresco, IA is in charge of arrangements.

Rusty, 91, died at the Cresco Care Center on Monday, March 25, 2013 where he had resided for the past thirteen months. He was a Cresco resident for nearly 80 years.Russell Adrian Barnes was born on March 14th, 1922 in Schley, Iowa the son of Michael and Verona (Novak) Barnes. He went to country school near Schley and was an altar boy at Holy Cross Parish in Schley. Rusty graduated from Notre Dame High School in Cresco. He enlisted in the Navy in 1942 and learned to fly in Kilgore, Texas. He was also stationed at Great Lakes Naval Academy in Chicago, IL and New Port, RI, where he was medically discharged on December 3, 1943.

Rusty was united in marriage to Dorothy R. Hertges on May 17, 1948 at Ossian DeSales Catholic Church in Ossian, IA. They raised their family in Cresco and were the loving parents of Rebecca (Clair " deceased) Patterson of Northwood, IA; John (Theresa) Barnes of Cresco; Michaeleen (John) Swanson of Lakeville, MN; Colleen (Kevin) Crow of Cresco and Daniel (Sue) Barnes of Adams, MN.

Rusty and Dorothy were avid fishermen and spent most weekends on the Mississippi River. Rusty worked for Coast to Coast in Cresco, B&G Automotive in Cresco and later for Cresco City Hall. He was a member of the Cresco Wildlife Club and of the American Legion in Cresco and helped with many fish fries and bingo stands.

Rusty is survived by his wife, Dorothy, his five children and thirteen grandchildren: Mike (Lisa) Patterson, Janna (Chad) Arndt, Jeremy Barnes, Sarah (Kilyn) Nuehring, Jacob Swanson, Michaela Swanson, Charlie Swanson, Jeffrey Crow, Stefanie Crow, Amber (Josh) Flatness, Cody (fiance Samantha) Barnes, Cameron Barnes and Delanie Barnes and ten great grandchildren and one great great granddaughter. He is also survived by one sister, Celeste Murphy of Bountiful, UT and four sisters-in-law, Virginia Barnes of Clinton, IA, Velma Hertges of Waterloo and Gladys Wolfe of Decorah, IA and Theresa Hertges of Ossian, IA and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Clair Patterson, seven brothers: Harry, Cornelius, Kenneth, Edmund (Cappie), Virgil (infant), Cyrus and Mark, five sisters: Inez Springer, Winifred Bily, Delores Brunni, Georgina Kovarik and Darlene Thompson also by many brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
