OBITUARY.
HESS.
John G. Hess died May 11, 1898. He was born in Switzerland Dec. 8, 1820, emigrated to America in the spring of 1856, locating in Ohio. In 1863 he moved to Indiana, and in 1865 to Iowa. He was married in 1844. His wife died 12 years ago. Their children all living are: Chas. G., Fred J., Albert J, John F., Frank A.. Edwin W., and Sophia R. wife of F. L. Daubersmlth.
Thirty three years ago he arrived in Howard county a poor man, Through industry and frugality he progressed financially. As a neighbor and in his transactions he was considerate, liberal, helpful, and conscientious. A faithful and devoted husband and father. He was unassuming, of a quiet and friendly disposition. He was a man of pronounced opinion and never hesitated to declare himself when circumstances required, but was not obtrusive, He advocated freedom of conscience and contended that all others should have as much liberty as he enjoyed and demanded for himself. Being guided by the conviction that “man's duty is to man" he aimed to be just to others, doing right because it is right to do so, personal satisfaction and approbation of others were sufficient to reward him. The thought of death had no terrors, seeing clearly that things having a beginning must, in compliance with the laws of nature, have an end, and also, that nature is our mother and her law is “dust to dust.”

CARD OF THANKS.
The friends and relatives of J. G. Hess desire to return grateful acknowledgement to all those who remembered them in the hours of sickness and in the greater sorrow of bereavement.
