CALLED HOME
Hon. J. H. Brown Passes Away on Wednesday Afternoon.
James Hurley Brown was born in Waynesburg, Green county, Pennsylvania, on June 30, 1814, and died at his home in Cresco on Wednesday, April 20, aged 83 years, 9 months and 20 days. His father was John Brown, a Pennsylvanian, who married Miss Jane Hurley, a native of Maryland. On the 6th day of March, 1839, the subject of this notice was married to Miss Malinda Huckins, in Iroquois county, Illinois, the bride then being 18, and the groom 25 years of age.
Eleven children were born to them, two girls and 9 boys, four of whom have long since crossed the silent river. The children living are Jane, wife of E. 1. Barker, John J., Geo. H., Chas. B., Josephine, wife of Geo. Keithley, of Bentonville, Arkansas, William C., and Alexander Hamilton, all of whom except two are residents of Cresco or vicinity.
His wife survives to mourn the loss of' her life's companion at the advanced age of 77 years.
Mr. Brown left Pennsylvania in 1816 and located in Belmont county, Ohio; in 1830 he went to Vermillion county, Ill.; in 1836 to Stephenson county, Ill.; then to Allamakee county, Iowa; in 1858 to Winnesheik{sic} county, and in 1866 to Cresco, where he has since resided; for the past sixteen years making their home in a comfortable cottage on a fifteen acre tract on the west outskirts of the city and which had been annually cultivated by him despite his years.
Mr. Brown was thrice elected to the Iowa legislature—’64, ’66 and ’68, the first term representing Winnesheik{sic} county—and well and faithfully he served his people. For several years he was a justice of the peace for Cresco.
He has belonged to the Masonic fraternity for 35 years and joined the Odd Fellows many years ago in Freeport, Ill.
He has been remarkably healthy and strong for one of his years, but for several years he has suffered with a bladder trouble which caused severe illness at times. He was seized with one of these attacks about two weeks ago which terminated in his passing quietly away at about six o’clock on the afternoon of Wednesday last. To the last his intellectual faculties were bright and clear and on his almost daily visit to the city delighted to stop for a chat with acquaintances on the topics of the day, or to tell his latest story or joke, for his was a happy heart made so by a long life well lived with no pricking conscience of wrong of any kind did to his neighbor or his fellow man.
The funeral will take place this afternoon from the residence at 1:30, the Masonic fraternity having charge. The interment will be in New Oregon cemetery where two sons are buried.
Most of the dates and facts in the above article were furnished by him, taken from an article somewhat biographical of Mr. and Mrs. Brown, which was published in the PLAIN DEALER about four years ago.
