Another Old Settler Gone-
George Reed was born in July, 1810. Died at Cresco, Iowa, June 15, 1897, aged nearly eighty-seven years.
The deceased was born in the north of Ireland, near Belfast; was the seventh child and fifth son of John Reed and Sally Slone-Reed. At the age of about twenty-one years he was married to Jane Sherry and shortly after this sailed from Belfast for America to make that his future home. After a long and tedious voyage they landed at Quebec, where they stopped for a while, then moved to the States, settling in Alburg, Grand Isle Co., Vermont, in 1832. Here, a family of six children were born to them, consisting of John W., May J., Eliza A., Lewis G., Henry T., and Elizabeth N., all of whom survive him except Eliza, who died in August 1893, near Milbauk, S. D. In the fall of 1855, with his family he removed to Iowa, reaching Frankville, in Winnesheik{sic} county, near Decorah, in November of that year, where he remained until the next spring and then moved to Howard county, settling four miles north of Cresco, in Albion township, and has ever since resided in this vicinity. In May, 1871, his wife died, since then he has lived, and made his home, with his youngest daughter, Mrs. W. E. Laidlaw, of Cresco.
He was a man of plain habits and vigorous constitution and till less than a year ago bore well the weight of his advancing years. He then began to grow feeble quite rapidly. In November last he fell and injured one of his hips, which caused him severe pain and confined him to the bed for some time and to the house ever since. For the past two months or more he was confined to the bed, gradually growing weaker until his death on Tuesday of last week.
George Reed was a good citizen and an honest, upright man, respected for his sterling integrity by all who know him. His funeral was hold from the home of his daughter, Mrs. Laidlaw, on Thursday afternoon his remains being laid to rest in Oak Lawn.
