Florence Hackman, age 96, of Cresco, Iowa passed away Sunday August 20, 2017 at Evans Memorial Home in Cresco.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 A.M. Thursday, August 24 , 2017, at Notre Dame Parish in Cresco, IA. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Cresco. Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 7:00 P.M. Wednesday, August 23, 2017, at the Hindt-Hudek Funeral Home in Cresco where there will be a scripture service at 7p.m. Visitation will continue for 1hr prior to the service at the church.
Florence Mary Luzum was born February 6, 1921, the second of 13 children born to William and Leona (Schissel) Luzum, on her parents family farm west of Calmar, Iowa. Florence was baptized, received First Holy Communion, and was confirmed at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Calmar, Iowa. She attended St. Aloysius Elementary Catholic School for 8 years.
On August 5, 1941 Florence was united in marriage to Othmar “Jerry” Gerhard Hackman at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Calmar, Iowa. To this union, seven children were born: Robert (deceased), Mary, Carol, Kenneth, Susan, Linda, and Stephen. Together Jerry and Florence worked the farm south of Festina for 21 years, moved to Cresco in 1962, and retired in 1977.
Over the years Florence worked at the Tower Club and the Red Hut as a cook and waitress and also worked at local retail stores. She enjoyed playing cards, dancing, gardening, cooking (she was famous for her potato salad), crocheting, sewing and quilting, but most of all she enjoyed spending time with her family. She was also active in the Altar and Rosary Society of St. Josephs Church.
Florence is survived by her children: Mary (Delbert) Hageman of Ossian, IA, Carol (David) Eischeid of Bellevue, IA, Kenneth (Nita) Hackman Cresco, IA, Susan (Dale) Balk of New Braunfels, TX, Linda (Jerry) Skoda of Decorah, IA, and Stephen (Debra) Hackman of Cedar Falls, IA; 21 grandchildren: Nancy Uhlenhake, Sharon (Bruce) Kleve, Michael (Karla) Hageman, Barbara (Dean) Miller, Sarah (Mike) Buchheit, Connie (Scott) Birely, Emily (Rick) Reeg, James (Karla) Eischeid, Jennifer (Mike) Becker, Kathryn (Rob) Peaslee, Alex (Lindsay Theisen) Eischeid, Shannon (David) Andera, Teresa (Ian) McDevitt, Andrew (Ashley) Hackman, Jeffrey (Katina) Hackman, Ben (Theresa) Balk, Brad (Amber) Balk, Jeremy (Rene Larson) Skoda, Jason (Kelly) Skoda, Scott (Kristin) Hackman, and Kayla (Chad) Schumacher; 49 great grandchildren; 6 great-great grandchildren; siblings: Joan (George) McCusker of Overland Park, KS, Monica (Tony) Steinlage of Decorah, IA, William (Jan) Luzum of Benson, MN, James (Arlene) Luzum of Rosemont, MN; in-laws: Irma Luzum (Arnold) of St. Lucas, IA, JoAnn Luzum (Paul) of Calmar, IA, Sister Phyllis Ann Hackman, Lucille Kruse, Paul (Betty) Hackman, Norbert (Mary) Hackman, and Phyllis (Duane) Einwalter.
She is preceded in death by husband Othmar on March 19, 1980; son Robert on September 1, 1942, parents William on December 5, 1980, and Leona on September 21, 1984; grandsons Gary Hageman and Matthew Hackman; grandson-in-law Jeff Uhlenhake; siblings: Arnold Luzum, Clarence (Dorothy) Luzum, Leo (Darlene) Luzum, Paul Luzum, Francis (Kara) Luzum, Esther (Vic) Luzum, Rita (Rudy) Humpal, Loretta Luzum Collins, Herman Steinlage; in-laws: Edward (Anna) Hackman, Wesley (Irene) Shatek, Joe (Rita) Shatek, Arthur Kruse, Sister Marcella Hackman, and Elnore Hackman.
The family would like to express deep gratitude for the loving and comforting care Florence received from the staff of the Evans Memorial Home in Cresco and the Regional Health Services Hospice. We were so blessed to have such special and comforting people caring for our mom. A special thank you to those who brought Holy Communion to Florence over the years and to Father Dennis Cain for all of his extra efforts.
