Darleen “Grandma B” Bakken, 82, of Cresco, Iowa, passed away on Saturday, June 15, 2013 surrounded by her loving family at her home. Darleen was born on August 1, 1930 in Fillmore County, MN to Clarence and Gladys (Walker) Hovey of Lime Springs, Iowa. She was baptized at the Saetersdal Lutheran Church in rural Lime Springs, Iowa. She attended the Howard County rural schools and also the Cresco High School. On June 19, 1948 she was united in marriage to Orvin Bakken in Preston, MN. Together they farmed all of their lives together. Darleen loved farming with her husband and family. She also enjoyed every minute spent with all of her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren. She loved sewing and making quilts. In 2012 she made 86 quilts and gave them to all her family and friends. Darleen was known for her mints, baking, volunteering at the meal site, H.O.C.A., Meals on Wheels, helping with Bingo at the Country View Care Center, and taking communion to shut-ins. She was a member of First Lutheran Church, the Martha Circle, and a member of the V.F.W. Auxiliary. She was very active until the last few months. She always kept her own yard and flowers so beautiful. Even though she also maintained her own home and care for herself, she always made time to help others, and always did so with such a big smile. Darleen is survived by six children, Susan Lang of Decorah, IA, Arnold (Connie) of Lime Springs, IA, Linda Wright of Cresco, IA, Judy (Dan) Biwer of Elma, IA, Rhonda (Bill) Boyle of Elma, IA, and Patty (Daryl) Lindsley of Miramar Beach, FL, 15 grandchildren, Jim Lang, Brian Bakken, Brady Bakken, Darin Burnikel, Devin Burnikel, Darrick Burnikel, Nathan Boyle, Nick Boyle, Kim Wilson, Dede Hackman, Darcy Hall, Jill Beran, Jamie Wickham, Jenny Patterson, and Kayla Boyle, 28 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren, brothers Don Hovey, Harold (Vera) Hovey, and Harry (Michelle) Hovey, sisters Sadie (Vince Thraenert, Janice Peter, and Charlotte (Ken) Hebrink, and sisters-in-law Dolly (Nestor) Reicks, Lorraine Greenslade, and Kathleen Sullivan. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband on September 3, 1991, a son-in-law Kelly Lang on February 8, 2012, one sister Helen Dotzler, one brother Orval in infancy, her mother-in-law Glora Bakken, her father-in-law Henry Bakken, brothers-in-law, Roger Bakken, Jerry Peter, Edward Dotzler, Robert Greenslade, and Don Sullivan, and sisters-in-law, Gladys Sullivan, Lillie Sebastian, and Marlys Hovey.

Cemetery:
Burial will be in the Oak Lawn Cemetery in Cresco.
