John H. Church, 86, of Cresco, IA passed away on Thursday, June 23, 2011 at the Evans Memorial Home in Cresco, IA.

John Henry Church was born on February 11, 1925 to G. Henry & Enid (Gooder) Church in rural McIntire, IA. He attended rural school and graduated in 1942. John later joined the U.S. Navy and served aboard the U.S.S. Franklin D. Roosevelt Aircraft Carrier in the Atlantic and Mediteranean. Later he was stationed at the Naval Headquarters in San Diego, CA, as a photographer and Navy news reporter.

In 1947 he married Lola Maye Witzel at Riceville, IA. To this union two children were born, Sandra and Craig. John worked in the creamery at Little Cedar and Nora Springs. IN 1949 they started farming north of Riceville, then at Davis Corners, finally in Winneshiek County, retiring in 1999.

John was a longtime member of the Cresco United Methodist Church, Howard County Farm Bureau, Dairy Shrine, and the Cresco Saddle Club.

He is survived by a daughter, Sandra (Fran) Donny, a son Craig (Gladie), 9 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and a sister-in-law, Lois Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and a brother William.

John will be remembered for his passion for his Guernsey and Angus cattle, his sheep, and his love for good dogs.

Memorial may be directed to the Howard County 4-H foundation.

Visitation:
Friends may call at the Lindstrom Funeral Home from 2-5 p.m. on Sunday, June 26, and also one hour prior to services at the church.

Service:
Funeral services will be held on Monday, June 27, 2011 at 1:30 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Cresco, IA.
