Richard Hellman, 71, of Cresco, IA passed away on Wednesday, October 13, 2010 at his home.

Richard Joseph Hellman was born March 18, 1939 Waterloo, Iowa, the son of Victor and Marie (O'Connor) Hellman. He graduated from U of I College of Pharmacy School in 1962. He later returned to the U of I where he earned his DDS in dentistry in 1968. After graduation he joined the Airforce and was stationed in New Jersey at McGuire Airforce Base for 2 years prior to moving to Cresco. Richard was united in marriage to Darlene French on September 9, 1961 at St Mary's Catholic church in Waterloo, Iowa. The couple had 49 wonderful years together. They lived together in Cresco for 40 years were Richard enjoyed practicing dentistry for 35 years. After dentistry, and all his life, Richard loved to hunt and fish with family and friends. During his retirement he enjoyed spending summers in his cabin in Minaki, Ontario where he showed all of his grandchildren how to fish the right way with night crawlers.

He was a lifetime Hawkeye fan even during the bad years. Richard never gave up on his beloved Hawkeye football team even going to his last game against Penn State. He was a member of Notre Dame Catholic Parish in Cresco, Iowa. Richard was a loving, husband, father, brother, grandfather and friend. Family was very important to him, he always came running when they were in need. He also enjoyed all the time he spent with his dental colleagues throughout the years.

He will be greatly missed by all.

Richard is survived by Wife Darlene Hellman, four Daughters: Debra (David) Oldham of Anamosa, Diana (Armando) Carter of Rochester, MN., Donna (Terry) Hovey of Mazeppa, MN and Darla (Curtis) Iburg of Coralville. Nine grandchildren: Emily Oldham, Casey Hovey, Abby and Alex Oldham, Jayden Oldham, Noah Carter, Dallas Carter, Cole Iburg,and Wyatt Iburg. Mother Marie Hellman Three brothers: Ronald (Mary Ellen) Hellman of Waterloo, Joesph (Helen) Hellman of Washburn, and Jim (Carol) Hellman of Cedar Falls. Two sisters Vicki (Wayne) Tappers of Shokepee, MN and Judy (Jerry) Kayser of Lanark, IL.

He was preceded in death by his loving father Victor Hellman in 1977.

Visitation:
Visitation will be Friday from 4:00 to 7:00 pm at the Lindstrom Funeral home in Cresco Iowa, and also one hour prior to services at the church.

Service:
A Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 am Saturday, October 16, 2010 at the Notre Dame Catholic Parish in Cresco. Father Dennis Cahill will officiate.
