Raymond Francis Murray, age 90, of Cresco, IA, died Tuesday, January 31, 2017, at Regional Health Services of Howard County in Cresco, IA.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, February 3, 2017, at Notre Dame Parish in Cresco, IA. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Cresco, IA. Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Thursday, February 2, at Hindt-Hudek Funeral Home in Cresco, IA. Visitation will continue an hour prior to the time of service Friday at the church.

Raymond Murray was born October 3, 1926 to Raymond and Margaret (Coughlin) Murray in Lawler, Iowa. He attended grade school at St. Joseph’s and graduated from Cresco High School in 1944 where he was president of his senior class. He married Mary Lou Henkes on August 9, 1954 at St. Joseph’s in Cresco, IA. Raymond and Mary Lou had four children.

Following graduation, Raymond served in the US Army. He served with the Army Occupation in Japan from 1945-1946. Ray held the rank of sergeant in Supply. He was later employed by the United States Postal Service as a rural mail carrier. Raymond was a lifelong member of Notre Dame Parish and was a member of the American Legion for 71 years.

Raymond was fond of sports and played baseball on the Cresco baseball team. Throughout his life Raymond was an enthusiastic Crestwood sports team fan. He was a devoted Packers fan and enjoyed fishing locally and in Canada with family and friends. After he retired, Raymond loved spending his free time playing golf.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Lou; daughter Nancy Murray of Omaha, NE; son William “Bill” (Diane) Murray of Iowa City, IA; daughter Barbara “Barb” Murray of Bloomington, IN; daughter Margaret (Ken) Funke of Dubuque, IA; sister Margaret Ann (Ron) Law of Ankeny, IA; sisters-in-law Joan Smith of Phoenix, AZ, Marilee Murray of Phoenix, AZ, Connie Murray of Davenport, IA, Marcella Kuene of Cresco, IA, and JoAnne (Merlin) Kratz of Cresco, IA; grandchildren Izaak (Gillian) Murray, Elizabeth Murray, Erik Murray, Nolan (Anne) Funke, Nathan Funke, Ellen Funke, and Owen Funke; and great-grandchildren Peter Funke and Dallas Murray.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Elizabeth Nixa and brother-in-law, Art Nixa; brothers Tom Murray and his wife, Elaine Murray; Bob Murray, John Murray, Ed Murray, Hank Murray and brother-in-law Dale Kuene.
