Services held for Charles Shores

Funeral services for Charles Shores of Protivin were held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, August 9 at the First Congregational Church in Cresco. Rev. Tim Sir officiated. Interment was in Bohemian National Cemetery, rural Protivin. Balik Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Charles, 96, died Saturday, August 5, 2000 at the Cresco Care Center in Cresco after a long illness. Charles donated his body to the University of Iowa for medical research.

Charles Louis Shores was born May 1, 1904 near Protivin, the son of Louis and Mary (Chyle) Shores. He attended country school near Protivin, he played his guitar for 4-H and school programs. Charles was inducted in the Army at Camp Dodge. On August 24, 1942 following basic training as an airplane and engine mechanic, he was assigned to the 405th Fighter Squadron of the 729 Air Force. Charles left for service in the European Theater of operations on February 28, 1944. He served with the 405th Fighter squadron through the following Campaigns: Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland, Central Europe and Air Force offensive Europe. He was awarded the following Medals and Campaign Ribbons: Good Conduct Medal, District Unit Badge, G.0795 9th Air Force, 1945 Victory Medal, American theater Ribbon, European, Africa, Middle Easter Theater Ribbon, with one Silver and one Bronze Battle Star. Three Overseas Service Bars, and one Service Stripe. Attaining the Rank of Staff Sergeant, Charles departed for the United States on October 29, 1945, arriving on November 7, 1945. He received his Honrable{sp} Discharge at the Reparation Center Fort Sheridan, IL on November 12, 1945.

Following his discharge, Charles returned to the Protivin Community where he was engaged as a self employed carpenter until his retirement. He joined the American Legion Post #605, Protivin on April 3, 1946 and continued that membership until his death, serving in various capacities, including a long period as Chaplain.

Survivors are three brothers: Milo of Fort Atkinson, and Louis and Walter both of Protivin.

Charles was preceded in death by his parents; and three sisters: Mary Shores, Elle Kinkor, and Lilian Whitney.
