Wayne Sovereign, age 83 of Cresco died Wednesday, June 8, 2016 at his home in rural Cresco.
Wayne was born January 27, 1933 at Cresco, Iowa, to Gerald and Elsie (Frank) Sovereign. He attended area schools and graduated from Cresco High School in 1951. He was an excellent wrestler, competing at State in 1951 with a 3rd place finish. He served in the US Army from 1953 to 1955 where he was stationed in Alaska. He married Marlene Jones on November 12, 1955 at the United Methodist Church in Cresco. He was a life-long Howard County farmer starting with his father, Gerald and eventually joined by brothers, sons, nephews and grandson. He was active in his community and served on many Boards. He enjoyed golf, fishing, being with the grandkids/great-grandkids, and his canine companions, Duke and Mitch. He spent many hours mowing lawn and tending the sweet corn patch. During retirement Wayne and Marlene enjoyed wintering in Florida where he played many rounds of golf and formed many lasting friendships. He was loved by many for his sense of humor and caring nature.
Wayne is survived by his wife, Marlene of Cresco; five children: Rick (Dee) Sovereign of Cresco, Steve Sovereign of Cresco, Lori (Rich) Davis, of Morris, IL, Sue (Roger) Vick, of Byron, MN and Jodi (Rob) Francis of West Des Moines; seven grandchildren: Casi (Matt) Hackman, Brad (Stephanie) Sovereign, Bethany (Nate) Watson, Zach and Grant Davis, Rachel (Nic) and Evan Vick; two great-grandchildren: Kayler Sovereign and Quinn Hackman; three brothers: Lowell (Gladys) Sovereign, Jim (Sue) Sovereign, Merle (Marge) Sovereign, all of Cresco; a sister: Pat (Don) Switzer of Cedar Rapids and longtime coworkers: Dick, Oscar, and Rick.
Wayne was preceded in death by his parents; a sister and brother-in-law, Connie and Kent Markham, and a nephew, Brian Sovereign.
