Gilmore City - Russell G. Shields, 62 of Gilmore City, Iowa died Friday, May 20 in Gilmore City.

Services will be held Tuesday, 10 a.m. at St. John's Catholic Church, Gilmore City with burial to follow at 2:30 p.m. in New Oregon Cemetery, Cresco, Iowa. Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. Monday at Harris Funeral Home in Gilmore City, where a vigil service will be held at 6:30 p.m.

Russell Shields, the son of Arthur and Mary (Opat) Shields was born Feb. 2, 1954 in Cresco, where he was raised and received his education, graduating from Notre Dame High School in 1972. He served his country in the Seabees and then in the United States Army after high school.

Russell worked at various jobs, but was widely known for his specialized work in woodworking, where he was considered a master carpenter. Using those skills, he helped with many 4-H projects.

Russell was custodian at the Pocahontas Community School Systems for the past six years, where he always was heard to say how much he loved the kids as well as his job.

He will be remembered for being a faithful Catholic, a kind and generous person who loved the outdoors and had a wonderful sense of humor.

His survivors include a son, Kristoffer of Sun City, Ariz.; and sisters, Carole (Wayne) Drilling of Cresco, and Marilyn (Kevin) Stein of Gilmore City; as well as his nieces and nephews.
