Mechtildis "Mickie" Carolyn Drilling, age 97, of Cresco died Monday, April 18, 2016 at the Evans Home in Cresco. Mickie was born June 21, 1918 at St. Lucas, Iowa to Henry and Mary (Boeding) Kuennen. As was typical for young women of the time, Mickie attended school only through the eighth grade; though later she continued her studies, earning her GED from the Cresco school district while her two youngest children were still in school. She married Urban Drilling on September 12, 1939 at St. Luke's Church in St. Lucas, Iowa. Alongside Urban, Mickie farmed a few miles north of Cresco all her life, finally leaving the farm for assisted living in 2013 at the age of 95. Over the years Micki was an avid gardener, and she loved to can, sew, quilt and crochet. She sewed many clothes for her family along with doing lots of mending! She crafted beautiful afghans for each of her children and grandchildren. Some of Mickie's interests included traveling, playing cards, reading, dancing and visiting her family and friends. She surrounded each new grandchild with love and care, and the arrival of each new great-grandchild filler her with the greatest happiness.

Mickie is survived by four children: Wayne (Carole) Drilling of Cresco, Karen (Jerry) Morrison, of Dale, TX, Mark (Juliana) Drilling of Nashua, IA and Gayle (Jerry) Jirak of Waucoma, Iowa; a son-in-law, Clarence Kriener of Lawler; 22 grandchildren, many great and great-great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Ethel Funke, of Cresco. Mickie was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Urban in 2004, a daughter, Geniece Kriener in 1989; all of her siblings and their spouses: Anna (William) Schmitt, Mary (Peter) Kriener, Frank (Elizabeth) Kuennen, Nick (Frances) Kuennen, Julia (Joe) Kriener, Arnold (Florence) Kuennen, Elizabeth (Ignatius) Hageman, Cecelia (Edmund) Gerleman, Sr. Frances Kuennen, also five who died in infancy: Wenceslaus, Mary, Edward, Agnes and Herman; her parents-in-law, Mathias and Catherine Drilling and her brother-in-law Hugo Funke.
