Elma - Marie Agnes Biwer, age 79, of Eau Claire, Wis. and Elma, Iowa died on Monday, Jan. 25, 2016 at St. Benedict’s Senior Community in St. Cloud, Minn. after having multiple myeloma cancer.

Marie’s Memorial Mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 20, 2016 at Immaculate Conception Church, Elma, with Father Steven Garner and Father Ken Glaser concelebrating. Visitation will be one hour prior to mass at the church.

A graveside committal service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 16, 2016 at Calvary Catholic Cemetery, Elma.

Marie was born on Aug. 23, 1936 to the late William and Theresa (Rosonke) Biwer in Elma.

She attended a one-room country schoolhouse through eighth grade. She then graduated from Immaculate Conception High School in Elma.

In January 1955, Marie became Sister Pius, as she joined the Sisters of Mercy in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Here she received her teaching degree at Mount Mercy Academy, currently known as Mount Mercy University. Marie was an elementary teacher, teaching mostly first and second grades. She taught at St. Joseph in Marion, Iowa, St. Patrick in Fairfax, Iowa, St. Patrick in Anamosa, Iowa, Immaculate Conception in Cedar Rapids, Helena, Mont., St. Matthew in Cedar Rapids, St. John in Waterloo, Iowa and Our Lady of Grace in Edina, Minn. After leaving the community, Marie taught at St. Rose of Lima in Roseville, Minn. and Immaculate Conception in Eau Claire.

Marie and a good friend, JoAnn Moran, worked and lived with the Benedictine Sisters at the Spirituality Center at St. Bede’s Priory, in Eau Claire. After St. Bede’s closed, they moved to St. Cloud, to be near the Benedictine Sisters. Marie led a simple life and had many friends. She enjoyed playing cards and games and helping others. Marie will be remembered, even by the very youngest, for all the birthday cards she sent.

Marie is survived by her siblings, Elaine Schmitz of Pleasant Hill, Iowa, Dorothy Schmitz of Ionia, Iowa, Rose Marie Hickey of Rochester, Minn. and Dan (Judy) Biwer of Elma; her sister-in-law, Judy Biwer of Zumbrota, Minn.; 19 nieces and nephews; 52 great-nieces and nephews; and six great-great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her dad in 1995; her mothe, in 2008; her brother, Bill in 1997; her brothers-in-law, Bob and Bill Schmitz; her nephew, Mike Schmitz; and her niece and goddaughter, Becky Snow.
