Luella Burnikel, 99, of Cresco, Iowa passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 8, 2012 at the Cresco Care Center.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 11, 2012 at Notre Dame Catholic Church with Father Daniel Knipper officiating. Burial will be held in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 to 11:00 a.m., Saturday at the church. The Hindt-Hudek Funeral Home 404 North Elm Street Cresco, Iowa is in charge of arrangements.
Luella Burnikel was born on Nov. 18, 1912 in Cresco, to Carl and Rose (Riehle) Herold. On June 19, 1935 she was united in marriage to John Burnikel at Assumption Catholic Church in Cresco. John preceded Luella in death in 1977.
Luella enjoyed spending her time tending to her garden, embroidery and knitting dish clothes for family and friends. She took joy in putting on her fishing hat, grabbing her pole and some worms and teaching her children and grandchildren how to fish. Luella liked to keep fishing simple, just a hook and a worm and great company. She was always ready to bet 25 cents on the first fish caught, the most and biggest fish. She spent many hours putting puzzles together. She adored her grandchildren and was eager to play the dice game Ziltch with them.
Luella is survived by her sons, Edward (Geraldine “Geri”) of Lime Springs, Harold “Butch” (Dorene) of Lime Springs, Richard (Barbara) of Green Bay, Wis. and Dale (Connie) of Ridgeway; 13 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; her brothers and sisters, Elmore (Peggy) Herold of Waterloo, Iowa, Lillian Daughenbaugh of Downey, Calif. and Edward Herold of Waterloo.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Lorraine in infancy; her grandson, Mark Burnikel of Green Bay, Wis.; and five brothers and sisters.
