Gertrude Hughes, 84, of Lime Springs, Iowa, passed away on Sunday, May 31, 2015 at the Evans Memorial Home in Cresco, Iowa. Gertrude Ann Collins Hughes, daughter of Claude and Florence Collins, was born June 16, 1930, at the home of her grandparents, Herbert and Gertrude Shuttleworth, in Cresco, Iowa. She attended school in Lime Springs, IA, graduating in May 1947. In 1949, she received her teaching certificate from the Iowa State Teacher’s College in Cedar Falls, IA. Gertrude went on to become a music teacher and grade school teacher in the Tripoli, IA, school system. Gertrude married Eddie George Hughes on June 8, 1949, in the United Methodist Church in Lime Springs. Gertrude and Eddie were parents of six sons: James, Wayne, Jarold, Donald, David, and Robert. While the boys were growing up, Gertrude was a substitute teacher with the Howard-Winneshiek School system. Music and faith played important roles in Gertrude’s life. Starting at the age of nine, she sang for many years in various Cresco and Lime Springs choirs. Gertrude was an active member of the United Methodist Church in Lime Springs. She served as President of the Lime Springs United Methodist Women for twelve years, taught Sunday School and music for the Sunday School classes, read scriptures during church services, and served as the secretary of the church’s Administrative Board. Gertrude belonged to many organizations during her life in Lime Springs: Oneota Club, American Legion Auxilliary, WNO Club, and Boy Scouts. While her six sons were active in Boys Scouts, she happily served as a Cub Scout Leader. Gertrude lived for the love of family, home, church, and friends. Blessings abounded in her life, and she was eternally thankful for the wonderful family and friends she had gathered in her life. Gertrude is survived by her husband Eddie of Lime Springs, IA and family: James (Penny) of Cresco, IA, Jarold (Ronda) of Lime Springs, IA, Donald (Cathy) of Aitkin, MN, David (Trisia) of Baxter, MN, and Robert (Julie) of Fort Dodge, IA, daughter-in-law Julianne of Phoenix, AZ; 17 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren; sisters Janice and Marilyn, brother Donald, and many extended family members. Gertrude was preceded in death by her parents and grandparents, brother Charles, and son Wayne.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday, June 11, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Lime Springs, Iowa, with burial in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery.Cemetery:
