Patricia Eileen Kelly was born in rural Chester, Iowa to Patrick and Elizabeth (O’Haire) Kelly on September 25, 1917, the youngest of five children. She attended a rural school through eighth grade and graduated from Chester High School in 1935. She graduated from Mount Mercy College in Cedar Rapids in 1937. She taught in rural schools near Chester, taught sewing classes for Singer Sewing Machine Co. in Waterloo and worked for Collins Radio in Cedar Rapids. On January 21, 1943, she married Allen Johnson of Lime Springs in Cedar Rapids. They settled on a farm near Lime Springs where Allen farmed with his father and brother. They had four children, Gail, Barry, Margie and Scott. In 1952 they moved to a farm near Kendallville where they enjoyed hosting friends and family for sliding parties, hunting, canoeing trips, picnics and great food from Patricia’s “Country Kitchen”. Patricia taught in elementary schools in Fremont Township, Harmony, MN and Cresco. She earned her Bachelor’s degree from Upper Iowa University in 1965. She retired in 1983 ending a 29 year teaching career. She moved from her farm to Cresco in 1989.

Patricia was active in 4-H as a member and later helping her children. She was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority, the 20th Century Club and later the IA Retired Teachers’ Association. She was baptized in the Catholic Church in Chester and was a long time member of the Notre Dame Parish. She was a gifted seamstress and sewed for her friends and family well into her 90’s.

A proud Irishman, Patricia travelled to Ireland twice, with Allen in 1979 and with Gail and Margie in 1999. She loved to travel and visited 14 foreign countries as well as 44 states.
