Iowa Plain Dealer February 20, 1890, P3 C3

IN MEMORY

Of baby Maggie Eveline, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. P. Noonan, died of Scarlet fever Feby 15, 1890, in the fourteenth month of her age.

Sleeping, baby Maggie Eva,
Darling beauty thou art sleeping,
While around thy vacant cradle,
We who loved thee, now art weeping.

Sleeping, baby Maggie Eva.
Ah, we miss the from our side,
For we meet in this world, never.
God hath willed it, thou hast died.

With a hopeful eye, we watched thee
As we would an opening rose,
Watched thee in thy playful waking,
Watch thee in thy soft repose.

And how often thou hast cheered us,
With thy gleeful little cry,
As we stooped for baby kisses,
Purest gems beneath the sky.

But, alas! there came a fever,
Like a wolf around his prey,
And he battled with the youngest,
And bore our darling babe away.

All in vain we tried to stay him,
Vainly tried her life to save,
‘Twas her Maker, who had called her
To her home beyond the grave.

Yet, why mourn we for our darling,
For He called her home to rest,
And we know that she is happy,
Crowned with glory, ever blest.

If to day, the power were given,
To call her back to life again,
Who would raise that crown of glory,
And call her to this vale of sin.

But if help you need to guide you,
As this vale you paddle through;
Father, mother, sisters, brothers,
She will intercede for you.

And when He, who called her, calls you
At Heaven’s gate, your babe will stand
With arms out-stretched, and sweet voice calling,
She will greet you, in the better land.

Ah, ‘twas hard our parting, Maggie,
Yet we humbly kiss the rod,
Now thy soul is with the Angels,
Now thy form beneath the sod.

In the springtime, while above thee
Creeps the moss rose, and the vine,
Sometimes we will sit beside thee,
Weeping, Maggie Eveline.
