DIED.

BALLARD.—In Farmington, Warren county, Pennsylvania, January 9, 1890, John W. Ballard, aged 68 years 9 months and 3 days.

The deceased was the eldest of a family of four children, two of whom have crossed over to the great beyond, and the other two, who are Mrs. Jane E. Harris of Orleans, and Mrs. Chloe B. Mead of this place; his only brother Wm. Ballard, having died in Cresco several years ago. His mother having died when he was but a mere lad he went to live on a farm with Ross Marsh, whose daughter, an only child, became his wife. He bought a farm adjoining that of his father-in-law, and upon the death of Mr. Marsh several years since, he moved into the house on the Marsh estate in which he began life as a boy where his first wife was born, lived and died, and where he also departed life. With his first wife and youngest daughter, he visited in Cresco some fourteen years ago, and a few years later with the wife who now mourns him. In the accumulation of worldly goods he amassed ample means to gratify every desire, and he derived a large fund of pleasure in enjoying with his family the comforts and luxuries it would provide. In the church he was an active member, and a liberal giver to its support. He leaves a widow and four daughters, all married, to mourn the loss of an indulgent husband and father. He was an honest man in every sense of the word, and a man who never owed any man a dollar for a moment after it was earned. He was one of the many, of whom it may be truly said, the world is the better for his having lived.
