Donald “Donnie” Aberg, age 73, of Cresco, Iowa passed away Saturday, August 30, 2014 at home surrounded by his family after his courageous battle with cancer.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, September 4, 2014 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Cresco, Iowa, with Pastor Karen Rossing Grandall presiding. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Cresco, Iowa. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 3, at Hindt-Hudek Funeral Home, 404 North Elm Street, Cresco, IA, with wake service held at 7:30 p.m. Visitation will continue an hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday.

Donald David Aberg was born on January 11, 1941 son of Martin and Julia (Citek) Aberg in Cresco, Iowa. He graduated with the class of 1959 from Cresco High School. After graduation Donnie joined the United States Air Force. He spent the next four years in England. He was honorably discharged on March 29, 1963 as Airman 2nd Class. Donnie attended the Los Angeles Trade Technician School to become a Heavy Duty Truck Mechanic for the city of Los Angeles, CA for 36 years. On August 10, 1984, Donnie married Judy (Gunhus) Scholbrock in Cresco, Iowa and became the step-father to Brian, Stacy, and Tracy Scholbrock. They lived together in the Los Angeles area until their retirement in 2000 and moved back to Cresco. Donnie and Judy enjoyed traveling and spending winters in Lake Havasu, AZ.

Donnie liked growing up in the 1950’s. His love for “50’s” music and cars stuck with him the rest of his life. He enjoyed spending his time listening to music, especially Chuck Berry, and working on his older vehicles. Donnie also spent his leisure time collecting coins, reading about History, crossword puzzles, playing cards, and watching the Iowa Hawkeyes play football.

Donnie is survived by his wife Judy of Cresco, IA, sons Brian (Jean) Scholbrock of Columbus, IN, Stacy (Julie) Scholbrock of Simi Valley, CA, daughter Tracy (Jeff) Barry of Cresco, IA, grandchildren Lindsay and Halle Scholbrock, Tayler, Trevor, Megan, and Will Watson, and Ava Barry, brothers Ronnie Aberg of North Hollywood, CA, Harold (Greta) Aberg of Oshkosh, WI, and Gerald Aberg of Perry, IA, sister Dorothy Woods of Tucson, AZ, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death are his parents, brothers Clarence Aberg and Gene Aberg, and sisters Ruth Duneman, Gladys Anderson, and Helen Kakac.
