David Joseph Tuchek, age 95, of Decorah, Iowa formerly of Cresco, Iowa passed away Thursday, August 28, 2014 at Cresco Care Center in Cresco, Iowa.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, September 1, 2014 at Hindt-Hudek Funeral Home in Cresco, Iowa, with Pastor Karen Grandall presiding. Burial will be in Oaklawn Cemetery, Cresco, Iowa. Visitation will be from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m. Monday, September 1, at Hindt-Hudek Funeral Home, 404 North Elm Street, Cresco, IA.

David Joseph Tuchek, son of Joesph and Agnes Esther (Ferrie) Tuchek was born on September 27, 1918. On September 28, 1941 he was united in marriage to Laverne Laura Halweg by Reverend Lio Moench at Cresco, Iowa. They were the parents of two children Mark Allan and Teri Lynn. He completed two years of high school and left school in 1936. David entered the United States Army on November 23, 1942 and served with the company “C” 5th Infantry 71st division as a Technical/Platoon sergeant for thirteen months. He was authorized to wear the European Theater ribbon with two battle participation stars. Also awarded the Combat Infantry Badge, European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Service Ribbon, American Theater Service Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, and Victory Medal. As a platoon sergeant he directed and supervised the work of thirty six men. He also went on patrols and scouting missions. Upon going overseas he served with Patton’s 3rd Army in the European Theater of war. He met President Eisenhower and General Patton. David was discharged March 14, 1946. He spent a year hospitalized at Sunnycrest Sanatorium in Dubuque for tuberculosis. He and his wife drove every week for five years to Clear Lake for treatment. Upon his recovery he worked four years at Nichols DX, and then as a bulk agent for the Sun Oil Company bulk plant for 21 years.

David is survived by his daughter Teri Lynn (Larry) Wyant, three granddaughters Carissa Lynn Wyant, Cassondra Marie Wyant, and Kelsey Jean (Matty) Schumacher, and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife Laverne, son Mark, brothers, John, Joseph, Lloyd, and Rudy, and sister, Ruth.
