DIED.

LANNEN.—At his home in Howard Center, July 16th 1886, of consumption, James Lannen, aged 49 years and 4 months.

The deceased was born in Killkeny County, Ireland, and came to this country when a boy, and has resided in Howard county twenty-five years. His life was spent in a quiet and happy manner, and has met the joys and sorrows of this world with contentment and a joyous spirit.

Friend of my childhood—friend of my youth,
Synomon{sp} ever of beauty and truth;
Can I believe that the cold grave hath bound the
Wrapping the mantle of silence around thee

Can I believe that the beautiful head
Is now lying low in the home of the dead?
That the smile on thy lip and the light in thine eye,

Is quenched now in darkness forever to lie;
That the beautiful form and dearly loved face
Is now lying still in death’s cruel embrace?

Can I believe that the tones of thy voic{sp}
Never again will make us to rejoice;
That thou dost no more to our earth-life belong!
O, grave, thou art cruel, and death thou art strong.
