Several of our old settlers and Masons have asked why we didn't publish the notice of the death of M. V. Burdick, which occurred at his sister's, some four or five miles from Cresco, on the 8th inst. Well, the fact is we are neither omniscient nor omnipresent, and the friends of the deceased left no notice of his death at this office. The Postville paper made the obituary notice, but omitted to send an advance copy to us, either through intention, oversight or negligence.

A twenty-year-old item in last week's Waukon Democrat revives memory of the fact that Judge M. V. Burdick died on the 8th day of May, 1886. The Judge was a leader in numerous respects thirty years before the day of his death. Among other tasks be did was that of editing the first paper printed in Decorah, by Tracy, the pioneer Decorah publisher. It was called The Decorah Chronicle, and the office came into the partial ownership of the writer of these lines in January, 1860.—Decorah Republican.
Transcriber's Note: One article says April and the other says May as the month he died.
