Iowa Plain Dealer December 17, 1885, P3 C6

DIED,

HESS.—Mrs. Elizabeth Hess, died at her home near this city, Dec. 8th 1885.

She was born May 29th 1820, in the town of Biel, Canton Bern, Switzerland.

In 1845 she was joined in the bonds of wedlock, with J. G. Hess.

In 1856, they decided to improve their condition by emigrating and residing in Ohio and Indiana, until 1865, when they moved to Howard county, Iowa, where by hard toil and economy they established a comfortable home in which she devoted all her energies to the welfare of her family. For years, because of ill health, she but seldom ventured outside the limits of their home; during many months she had been confined to her room, and finaly{sp} to her bed. During her long and distressing sickness she maintained cheerfulness to a surprising degree, and few knew how much she suffered. Though desirous to remain with her family, she admitted that she did not wish to change (if she could) the final outcome of her sickness, her sufferings were unrelenting and she wanted rest.

Her bereaved husband, one daughter, six sons and fourteen grand children mourn the loss of a devoted wife, loving mother and affectionate grandmother (all but one of her children are married.)

It was a great satisfaction to her, to see herself surrounded by all her children, the absent ones (two sons) were summoned from Dakota, and all joined in a last farewell.
