Death From Diseased Pork.
The family of August Nast, living on Dr. Clemmer’s farm north of Cresco have been suffering from the effects of eating pork infected with trichinae, the father of the family dying last Monday night. Three of the children are now sick from the same cause, and it is thought beyond hope of relief.
In the early development of the case they were attended by Drs. Clemmer and Roome, but not improving as the friends thought they should, Doctors Eddy and Felkner were called in, and after a careful diagnosis of the case pronounced them suffering from the effects of trichinae.
They procured some of the pork from which they had eaten and for several days pieces of it has been on exhibition at Webber’s Drug store where under their microscope it appeared to be one mass of living parasites.
Last Monday night Mr. Nast died, death having come to his relief in 21 days after infection There are three children in the family sick from the same cause, one a boy about 11 years old, another about two years and one girl aged about 8 years, hope is entertained of the recovery of the children. Mrs. Nast has been sick during the time but probably she ate but few of the worms that never die.
In addition to these is Betty Gerhard, a German girl, who had but just reached Cresco, and as her parents were known to Mr. and Mrs. Nast, she went there remaining from Friday until Sunday night. She too partook of the infected meat and is at Dr. Clemmer’s sick with little or no hope of being better.
